Can an archive node use an HDD instead of SSD?

Nodes typically use SSDs, because they have faster access speed than HDDs. But an archive node needs lots of space, and SSDs storage is expensive. So maybe there is a way to run an archive node with HDDs? Or the access speed requirements make that impossible?
